Finding the everyday good in dementia caregiving

Finding the everyday good in dementia caregiving means shifting the focus from loss to connection. Through simple routines, validating emotions, and celebrating small victories, you can transition caregiving from a long list of exhausting tasks into rewarding lasting memories.

Shifting focus is not easy. It takes practice, patience and a willingness to reframe in the moment. Instead of focusing on whether something is factually accurate, we focus on their feelings instead of what they stated. When we look at the emotions behind the words, we may find longing, fear, frustration, boredom or a need for reassurance.

💡 How do we join them in their reality? Use empathy instead of facts.

Try using some of these:
➡️ I am here, you’re safe.
➡️ Let’s do this together.
➡️ That sounds like it is important to you (validating feelings from memories).
➡️ It’s okay, take your time (avoid rushing).
➡️ Tell me more about that.
➡️ What a beautiful story (even if it makes no sense).
➡️ I see you’re feeling (sad/anxious/frustrated). I’m sorry I upset you.
➡️ Would you help me with this?
➡️ Let’s go (get something to eat/listen to music).
➡️ Tell me about when you were younger.
➡️ What is something that always brings you joy?
➡️ I love you.
➡️ You are doing great.
➡️ Let’s look at these photos.

Start by speaking slowly, using their name often, making eye contact, relaxing your body language, limiting distractions like background noise, and giving yourself the grace to be forgiving. It’s not about being perfect. It is about being present in the moment.

Dementia caregiving changes the way we define a good day. It may not mean everything went to plan. It may mean there was a peaceful meal or singing a familiar song together or a moment when your loved one felt understood. Those moments matter. They don’t make the hard parts go away, but they remind us that connection can still be found with them.

❤️ Finding the everyday good does not erase the fatigue, grief or uncertainty. When you focus on connection, respond to their feelings and celebrate the small victories, you make space for dignity and love.
